The beginning of December sees a flurry of activity in London's galleries and sale rooms in the form of Old Master Sales Week.  It is an opportunity for the Art World to focus on fine art by established artists from the past whose works have stood the test of time and whose legacies are clear for all to see.  Stair Sainty are delighted to be showing paintings at our gallery, 38 Dover Street, by Old Masters including Boucher, Subleyras, Oudry, Goya and Loir, as well as 19th century artists such as Delacroix, Degas, Manet and Levy-Dhurmer.   Come and visit out gallery weekdays from 10am to 6pm....

Marianne Loir, Alexandrine Guerin de Tencin and Émilie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil (Marquise de Chatelet) were three women with a common link, whose achievements in male-dominated eighteenth century France are particularly notable. Marianne Loir, whose portrait of the elegant Monsieur de Fontaine is on exhibition on Stair Sainty’s stand at The European Fine Art Fair, Maastricht, was the only French woman artist to achieve some renown during her lifetime, two generations before Vigée Lebrun. Her portrait of the Marquise de Chatelet (Bordeaux, Musée de Beaux-Arts), presents the brilliant mathematician, author, and natural philosopher seated at her desk and holding mathematical dividers as a symbol of her scientific genius.

After a decade in a Canadian private collection, this exceptional rococo painting by François Boucher will be shown at TEFAF Maastricht by Stair Sainty Gallery. Commissioned circa 1740 by Alexandrine Guérin de Tencin for the entrance to her renowned Salon at 390 rue Saint Honoré, this painting was rediscovered in 2007 and first exhibited at TEFAF Maastricht in 2008. Sotheby's were able to announce quite a decent total for their January Old Master offerings of just over $27 million for some 41 lots. Looking at what actually happened, however, gives quite a different picture. Of these 41 lots, 20 went unsold and the bid price on 13 of the sold lots was at or below the low estimate. So how did this sale produce such a result? There were just four lots that made over $1 million and three of these made a multiple of their estimate; it was these three, which sold for a total of $15,150,000, that made the sale seem a success even though the bid price on only 8 lots exceeded the low estimate.
